2012 Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) research, development and demonstration Roadmap for the Next Generation Air Transportation System - Household UAV and Drone Operations
This is the first report on progress in producing a NextGen Unmanned Aircraft Systems Research, Development and Demonstration Roadmap (NextGen UAS RD & D Roadmap). The activity was created to provide a responsive, efficient, timely and coordinated several institutions for research and development (R & D) effort that will enable the United States to fully realize the benefits of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to enable the national airspace System (NAS).

The use of UAS dates back to the earliest days of flight. UAS play today an increasingly important role in many public tasks such as border protection, wildlife surveys, military training, weather monitoring, and local law enforcement. However, expanding domestic UAS operations was inhibited by a lack of a common understanding of what it takes to safely and routinely operate UAS in the NAS.

Challenges such as the lack of an onboard pilot to see and avoid other aircraft and the wide variety of unmanned aircraft missions and opportunities need to fully integrate UAS operations are addressed in the NAS in the NextGen term.

This report is a major effort on the part of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) partner agencies for a number of institutions roadmap of R & D necessary to allow routine activities of UAS in the NAS NextGen fix. This first report is intended to achieve the following objectives:

Document an initial series of critical R & D challenges that must be addressed to enable routine access for UAS in the NAS NextGen * Develop an approach for linking the R &  D activities of the partner agencies with R & D needs of the FAA to support the integration of UAS into the NAS * Adopt an approach to the coordination of R & D activities of the participating organizations to these challenges to address * Identify relevant ongoing and planned R & D projects to serve as a basis for the NextGen UAS RD & D roadmap * Set back a series of steps towards achieving a responsive, doorgelicht roadmap voortgangsbewaking, and identify actions that need to be
