WiFi FPV vs 5.8GHz FPV vs 2.4GHz FPV: What is FPV

If you have been into RC drone hobby for a while, the term „First Person View” must be familiar.

More and more drones manufacturers are producing FPV drones. As the RC drones prices are more affordable, lots of people have begun to practice this hobby. There are some FPV drones under the price tag of 100 euros and they are intermediate pilot`s next choice, but there are some varieties of FPV tech that can make your experience better or worse.

For those who are not familiar with the FPV term, in short, FPV is the tech that lets you see what the drone sees. This helps a lot, especially when you are flying long range and you lose sight of your quadcopter or RC drone, the FPV lets you know exactly where your drone is and where you are flying it because you can see what is around it. There are some varieties when it comes to FPV:

  • 2.4 GHz analog
  • 2.4 GHz (WiFi)
  • 5.8 GHz
  • Other higher frequencies

2.4GHz FPV
2.4 GHz analog FPV happens to be the least favored because there is a lot of noise that makes the 2.4 GHz analog FPV video blurry and that is the main cause that makes the 2.4 GHz analog FPV so unpopular.

WiFi FPV
2.4 GHz WiFi FPV is the most popular method to include FPV in RC drones. Lots of RC drones under 100 euros that have FPV-enabled are using 2.4 GHz WiFi FPV. The reason why it is so popular is that the 2.4 GHz WiFi FPV transmitter is inexpensive and while 2.4 GHz analog and 5.8 GHz technologies require pilots to purchase additional hardware, WiFi FPV needs only a working Android or iOS smartphone or tablet. The RC drone creates a WiFi network of its own, which you will need to connect to in order to start the live feed.

Unfortunately, there are some downsides. The range is quite small, lots of interference and the biggest one, there is the lag between what you see and what the drone sees. The 2.4 GHz WiFi FPV is a great start for people who want to fly a tiny drone inside the house.

5.8GHz FPV
This is the preferred choice of professionals and hobbyists because it has high range and high bandwidth. 5.8 GHz analog FPV requires additional hardware. Fortunately, there are affordable screens that will fetch the live feed sent from the drone`s camera, and there are full-fledged goggles for you to take it to the next level.

It is advised for beginners to stay away from the 5.9 GHz FPV because you really need to know what are you doing to be good to go.
