This paper will roll in which the nation can use these assets to identify the defense of the fatherland. Drug Prohibition, port security, disaster relief, search and rescue, and border control are only a few potential roles. Finally, this paper looks at potential obstacles, both legal and policy, to the implementation of a proposed road ahead.

How can protect the United States leverage DoD ISR assets and to defend the homeland? The US border with Canada stretches over 5,400 miles. In the south, the border with Mexico is more than 1950 miles. In addition, the United States has to defend more than 12,380 miles of coastline. (2) The long borders and vast amounts of coastline represent a major challenge for the authorities responsible for US security. The difficulty of securing means our southern border is particularly well documented. The US-Mexico border has 43 legitimate border crossings. But the rest of the line consists of open desert, rugged mountains and other geographic barriers make surveillance. Inability of the US security guard across the border makes the entire time it easier to smuggle drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States. (3) Not only are drugs a threat to the United States, would be a bigger concern if terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda chose to smuggle their agents and / or weapons of mass destruction (WMD) are used for drug trafficking via the same routes.

Today, many federal and national organizations responsible for maintaining the security and defense of the fatherland: Northern Command (NORTHCOM), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Border Patrol, Coast Guard, state and local police. Many of these organizations are operating under strained budgets and can acquire adequate financial resources and personnel and surveillance capabilities they seek to maintain missed. It is necessary to utilize the existing capacities and know-how to improve the effectiveness and reduce excess capacity in an effort to save money. In particular, such a possibility is DoD UAVs.
