Hubsan H122D X4 Storm: Entry-Level Racing Drone

Drone racing represents one of the best activities for beginners that want to dip their toes into the drone market. Many racing quads are ready-to-fly requiring no assembling, making it an ideal choice for people that are not familiar with the multiple moving parts of drones. We will highlight such a drone in our review, and that is the Hubsan H122D X4 Storm.

The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm is quite a valuable drone and a great option for beginners considering its lower entry point and the features it comes packed with.

Design

Racing drones must be able to move seamlessly through the air, having increased performance and being able to reach higher speeds. This is not a toy-grade drone but a highly functional racing machine projected with an aerodynamic design in mind, made to be as fast as possible.

The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm is built in a highly mobile manner, allowing beginners to carry the vehicle anywhere, without having to own any additional accessories. It is a small drone in size, incorporating only the basic things that it needs.

Durability is a must in any racing quad. A durable drone can save beginners lots of money since due to the lack of piloting experience crashes will often be experienced. This drone is not made out of plastic but, out of strong and highly durable carbon fiber.

As a ready-to-fly drone, the Hubsan H122D X4 Storm can be used straight out of the box since it comes with all of the needed parts assembled. You only have to insert the batteries in the drone and the controller and you’re ready to go. This feature makes the drone ideal for all types of pilots, especially the beginner ones.

Performance

The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm is not the highest-performance machine out there but, it does have some exciting features for its price range. The quad can fly for up to 6 minutes on a single fully-charged battery. This is not an ideal scenario by any means so, the acquisition of extra batteries is highly recommended. If you want to reach optimal performance with this drone, you should buy at least 3-4 additional batteries.

Speed is a fundamental characteristic of racing quadcopters. The X4 Storm can reach a maximum of 22 miles (35km) per hour. Even if it’s not such a bad performance, when compared to top-notch drones such as the Bolt one, the X4 Storm is lacking considerably in the speed department.

The drone comes with two basic speed modes, representing a great option both for beginners but also for more advanced users. It has a low-speed mode in which the drone operates at 50% of its full potential. This is a good mode for beginners who want to master their drone flying skills without experiencing too many risks. However, you can also tap into an experienced mode to utilize the full performance of this drone.

Additional Features

The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm comes with a couple basic but fun and useful features. You can perform 360-degree flips with the touch of a single button. You can also fly the drone for up to 100 meters, which is a considerably small distance for experienced users but it might be a good option for beginners.

The drone has a built-in VGA camera that can transmit real-time footage straight to your phone. The camera is not good enough for photography or videography purposes but it can do a decent job when it comes to racing.

The drone has a couple of different flight control systems. You can control it traditionally through the 5.8GHZ transmitter. However, you can also attach your phone and fly the drone that way. For a more immersive experience, you can always utilize the VR set that comes in the package to control this flying vehicle.

Pros:

  • Ready-to-fly drone
  • FPV/VR control mode
  • Built out of durable carbon fiber
  • Lightweight and highly-portable
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Two speed modes

Cons:

  • Very low battery life of 6 minutes
  • Low flying range of only 100 meters

Conclusion

The Hubsan H122D X4 Storm is quite a basic drone with fundamental features and performances, representing a good option for beginners. For a more experienced user, the drone might be too limiting. But, considering its price tag, the drone might be a good investment if you’re interested in learning the ropes of flying. Its price varies from shop to shop. You can buy the Hubsan H122D X4 Storm for $90 on Gearbest and for $117 on Amazon.
