Design and build
On the first look, the Holy Stone HS120D looks a bit like the Phantom 4 Pro. Which is not a bad thing, because we all love how the P4 looks. It has a jet black coating all around, so it will be easy to see it during daylight. At the end of each motor arm there is a LED light to make it easier to spot it during night time.
The drone has a size 270x270x120 mm, which is not that small, so be careful how you transport it. As for the weight, it measures 221g, this means you don’t have to register it to the FAA if you live in the USA. The motors on the Holy Stone HS120D are brushless motors, which has a lot of benefits. First, they require less maintenance, they are silent and they reduce friction to enhance the duration of battery life. The landing gears are under the drone so it can protect the camera. Also, the camera doesn’t get dirty and you won’t have dust on the lense.
The drone comes with a 7.4v 1200 mAh lipo battery. This is a modern modular battery that gives you a longer flight time. In the case of Holy Stone HS120D, the flight time is 18 minutes. However, depending on the environment and your flight time this could be reduced even to 15 minutes. Which is not a bad time for a drone that comes for less than $200. If the time still seems to be that it’s not enough you can purchase spare batteries you double your flight time. The battery needs 2 hours to charge it completely, so make sure you plan a flight ahead and you have time to charge the battery.
The remote controller looks pretty professional. It uses the same foldable concept as some of the controllers from DJI. It has a simple design, just the two throttles and some buttons on the front. All the buttons are enabled with small icons so you can learn faster the purpose of each button. The controller even comes with a foldable phone holder where you can keep your smartphone during a flight so you get a better FPV view. On the left side, it has a built-in LED that indicates the battery life of the remote controller. The range of the remote controller is 300 meters from the controller to the drone. This is a decent distance which should be enough to make amazing videos.
The camera on the HS120D is a 1080p, wi-fi supported flexible camera. The fact that it uses Wi-Fi technology, means that the camera can be adjusted remotely to offer a complete aerial experience for beginners like you. The camera is able to move up or down 75-degrees. So you don’t have to move the drone in a perfect position because now you can just adjust the camera angle to get a good view.
The HS120D’s camera is an optimized one. This means that the transmitted images will be the highest possible. So in the case of the Holy Stone H120D, you get a clear 1080p transmission to your phone, so you’ll have a clear and sharp FPV view.
The Holy Stone HS120D has a lot of useful modes, which will help all the beginners and experts to make amazing footages. Let’s start with the fact that it is a GPS drone, this means it flies more stable thanks to the GPS connections which will help the drone in orientation.
Most of these flight modes can be accessed from only the app, so you will need to download the app which is available for both Android and iOS devices. The first, and maybe the most used feature is the orbit mode. You can set the drone to make circles around a certain object. You also have auto-return mode, which is handy if you want to end your flight session.
One of the entertaining features on this drone is the Gesture control lets you pose for the camera to activate phone jack and video recording. This will let you take photos and videos without holding the controller or the phone in your hand. There are only a few controls that you can do with hand gestures, check them out in the users manual.
The Holy Stone HS120D is a great camera quadcopter that beginners can use too from day one, as shown in our review. It has a bunch of handy smart flight modes and an optimized 1080P camera that delivers high-quality aerial shots. The flight time for one battery, which is around 16 to 18 minutes is also great. The control distance is also remarkable because this drone can fly 300 meters far from you. These qualities make this drone one of the best besides his competitors.
If you are looking for a camera drone that is easy to operate this might be a good choice. Some experts might find it boring because it can’t record in 4K, but if you’re a beginner you will find a lot of joy flying this quad.
